The 1990s Are Back: Retro Design Themes for Your Home

The design trend in the 1990s was unlike anything the world had ever seen before. It actually has influenced much of the decor we still see in homes today. See how even though the '90s have come and gone, their influence on home decor has remained and is changing the way we decorate. These are just a few ways the '90s decade is still leaving its mark in our homes today.

Use Saturated Colors to Set Off a Space

The '90s took a little influence from the colorful '80s by incorporating pops of color into home design. Mainly utilizing primary colors, the '90s were filled with accent walls and decor pieces to complement neutral-toned spaces. With a little variation today, we have managed to create the same effect using the idea of color-blocked rooms where an accent wall sets off the white or neutral feel of the room. This can also be seen in the other decor pieces that may have a pop of color to set off neutral walls.

Patterns Are Still In

The '90s were a decade marked by patterns. There were geometric wallpapers, throw rugs and even curtains. Nowadays, we still incorporate patterns into our largely simple spaces. Most often the trend is seen in accent pieces with patterns on them, such as beautiful rugs or tables with patterned tile designs. As much as we don't want to admit it, the '90s are alive in 2016 with the use of geometric accents.

Pastels Aren't Just for Easter

Don't be fooled when you think pastels only pair well with Easter eggs! Pastel colors can really make a space pop, especially when mixed with jewel tones and flashy furniture pieces. Pastels can really transform a space and make your home interesting to guests.

White Is so Chic

White is as in now as it was in the 1990s, especially when it comes to kitchens. The all-white kitchen is still seen as elegant and traditional to interior designers everywhere. Its classic, clean appearance makes it totally desirable. Surprisingly, white on white doesn't look bad. In fact, it adds an air of sophistication.

Contrast: So Hot Right Now

The '90s combination of black and white in one space is here to stay. Mixing black and white in a space is easier than ever and looks completely trendy. Decorators are able to break up the black-and-white contrast using other accent colors, such as a rich mauve or a forest green. The black-on-white contrast will add dimension and depth to the space.

If you're looking to spice up your 2016 home, look no further than the design history of the '90s.
