6 Simple DIY Projects

The DIY, or do-it-yourself, movement was made possible by easy access to tools and materials through the hardware stores that eventually gave way to big box home improvement stores. Choosing the right DIY project for your home will depend on many factors, including your comfort level and aptitude and the availability of materials. Here are six common and simple DIY projects to try:

Stenciled wall designs

Wallpaper for an entire wall or room can be expensive. A much cheaper alternative is to stencil a design in your room. You can buy premade stencils in any pattern and use regular wall paint in any color you choose to add a pop of artistic flair to the base coat. If you don't want a fancy stencil, you can use painter's tape to create straight lines or patterns.

Upholster your headboard

If you sit up in bed to read or watch TV at night, you know that a metal or wooden headboard can be murder on your lower back. But there is a simple fix. You can use fabric and padding to create a headboard that will be comfortable for you. There are plenty of online tutorials and videos on YouTube to show you how.

Paint old furniture

Do you have furniture that's in good condition but not attractive? The easiest way to make it pop is to paint it. You can use whatever color or sheen matches your room, and paint with small rollers or brushes to transform your old furniture.

Build a picture ledge

Have you seen the trend of decorating with a picture ledge? Rather than hanging paintings or photos on the wall, some people use shallow shelves to place pictures for a high-end look. With a bit of scrap wood and paint or stain, you can build your own.

Install a peel-and-stick backsplash

If you want to give your kitchen a refresh, try peel-and-stick backsplash tile behind your sink or stove. There are plenty of options available online, and they're easy to install. Add a pop of color or pattern to elevate your kitchen design.

Build an outdoor firepit

If your DIY dreams are leading you to an outdoor project, consider building a firepit. Stack pavers or landscaping bricks into a round, and create a perfect place to relax outside by a roaring fire when the sun goes down.
