“Beyond Bricks & Mortar: How Capital Campaigns Can Fund Big Ideas and Defined Impact”

Tuesday, October 23, 2018, 11:30am – 1:30pm

The City Club of San Francisco

155 Sansome Street, 9th Floor Library Room

The traditional capital campaign is a familiar model for inspiring philanthropic investment in important physical assets. When we raise funds to build a new hospital wing or to restore a cathedral, we are serving clearly implied impact - goals like better medical care and historical preservation that are easily embraced by donor communities. But how can we apply the best practices and strategies of capital campaigns to fund new ways to build a better society? Can we inspire the same level of philanthropic investment in new, big ideas that tackle persistent, complex problems?

This session will examine some of the key elements of successful capital campaigns, and then apply those concepts to today’s philanthropic trends and innovations. From recent initiatives of The San Francisco Foundation and The Ford Foundation, to the broader world of “big bet” philanthropy, to new models for social impact bonds, we will explore how well-tested communications and fundraising strategies can be reimagined in the service of bold ideas.
